A Deep Dive into Medical Marijuana and Other Family Related Issues
Description

During this session we will cover the history of medical marijuana legislation in Louisiana, which includes three enacting laws passed over the course of thirty-seven years to ultimately get the program started. We will discuss the five years that it took for patients to have access to medical marijuana once the program started and the ongoing evolution of the current medical marijuana law. We will discuss some of the most significant secondary issues that arose once medical marijuana became available in Louisiana, including employment drug policy issues, possession of illegal substances, banking violations, coordination of care, and second amendment concerns. In addition, we will discuss other controlled dangerous substances and legislative attempts to curb abuse in recent years. Finally, we will briefly discuss how legislative oversight of the Department of Children and Family Services escalated due to drug related family events, including child abuse and death.
